From the start of the pandemic until now, the majority of Bank of England staff have been working from home, with only 5% of staff who cannot do their workload remotely. Before the pandemic, in 2019, only 5% of the bank staff were working remotely. In addition, the bank's calculations show that before the pandemic, its employees spent a total of 10,000 hours a day getting to and from work.
In considering the move to a more flexible working model, they took into account the pandemic situation as well as the wishes of bank employees, most of whom said in an internal survey that they wanted to work remotely at least two days a week, Ms Place said.
According to the new rules, which will be applied for the time being in test mode, employees will have to come into the office on the days when there are general departmental events that require their presence in person, which is at least once a week. On other days, it is up to them to decide whether to come into the office or work remotely. The bank expects the number of employees coming into the office to increase gradually, but says it is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
