Boeing civil aviation segment manager Stephanie Pope informed employees in a letter that the team negotiated in good faith, but the proposed terms were not taken seriously by the union.
Her statement indicated that the demands of the IAM go well beyond what the company considers to be within a reasonable level of competitiveness.
Boeing's most recent offer, presented on Sept. 23, suggested a raise of 30 percent across a four-year period, instead of the 25 percent in the previous proposal. If approved, it would increase the average annual salary for machinists on the northwest U.S. Atlantic Coast to $111,155 from $75,608.
The union initially asked for a salary increase of 40% spread out over three years. Members rejected a previous offer from Boeing. Their earnings have risen by 4% in the last eight years.
