CERN may shut down Large Hadron Collider

The possibility of turning off some particle gas pedals during periods of high energy demand is being considered by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

The organization does not completely rule out the possibility of needing to halt the operation of the Large Hadron Collider. The Wall Street Journal was informed of this by Serge Claudet, the chairman of the CERN Energy Management Commission (WSJ).

Mr. Claudet claims that CERN is attempting to prevent an unexpected power interruption that may render the Large Hadron Collider, which is valued more than $4.4 billion, inoperable.

Serge Claudet said that CERN is attempting to obtain a 24-hour notice to limit power usage if necessary from its energy provider, France's EDF SA. In an effort to save money on energy, CERN may also turn off some of its particle gas pedals. According to him, this should result in a 25% reduction in electricity use.

According to the WSJ, CERN uses approximately a third of the energy required to feed Geneva, which is close to where it is located, during peak hours.
