On Sunday, the Chinese Embassy in Paris called on France to establish "transparent criteria and treat all companies equally."
They warned that a difference in treatment depending on the country of origin of the company would be seen as “flagrant discrimination” and “masked protectionism”.
The embassy statement also contains a veiled warning. “We do not want the development of Finnish Nokia Oyj and Swedish Ericsson AB in China to suffer from discrimination and protectionism” against Huawei from France and other European countries, the embassy said.
Huawei, the world's largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, has run into obstacles as the US suspects Chinese technology companies of having links with the PRC government and fears that they might be used by Beijing for covert espionage. Huawei denies infringement.
In late January, the UK decided to give Huawei limited access to its 5G networks. “High-risk providers” will not be able to participate in the development of “critical components” of 5G networks; in other parts of the networks, their participation should not exceed 35%.
Later, during a visit to the UK, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said that Washington "will evaluate how the UK will implement its planned projects." According to Pompeo, the British authorities "still have a chance to review the implementation of these plans."
