This is an absolute record for the full history of observations, which have been made by the program's professionals since 1940, and generally for the planet's entire history, according to data from the Climate Change Observation Service of the European Copernicus program.

Many parts of the world were affected by a large heat wave and fierce forest fires that occurred in Russia, Canada, and the Mediterranean region. The heat wave coincided with the unusually high average temperature. It reached 42 degrees in Central China on Monday; 37 degrees in Japan; 31 degrees in Alaska; and 44 degrees in Spain.

The increase in average temperatures cannot be entirely offset by the southern hemisphere, where winter reigns. Experts predict that this week could be the week when the temperature record is broken. After then, a heat wave record will be set.

The last time this happened was in July 2023 and it lasted for four days. Prior to that, a couple days in August 2016 saw record highs.
