Commissioner Thierry Breton announced on the social network X that the European Commission has opened an inquiry into TikTok due to potential infractions of the Digital Services Act, DSA, a piece of European legislation pertaining to digital services and the protection of children. "Today we are launching an investigation into TikTok on suspicion of violating transparency and obligations to protect minors," he stated.

Breton, quoted by Reuters, claims that the decision to look into it was taken after reviewing the short video app's risk assessment report and the business's answers to the EC's questions. The news agency writes that the regulator will investigate the platform's compliance with laws pertaining to safeguarding minors from harmful content and guaranteeing advertising transparency.

A representative for TikTok responded to Reuters that the company has already created settings to shield teenagers from offensive material and bar users under the age of 13 from using the service.
