The European Union expressed shock over a recent law introduced in Afghanistan regarding "promoting virtue and preventing vice," as stated by European diplomatic chief Josep Borrell on behalf of the EU.

“We cannot tolerate this latest decision that is yet another damaging setback for the rights of Afghan women and girls,” said Borrel. He urged the Taliban to stop the systematic mistreatment of Afghan women and girls, stating that it could be considered as gender-based persecution, a crime against humanity under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, a treaty that Afghanistan is a part of.

The EU stated that the law further limits the freedoms of Afghans like the Taliban did, including mandating specific clothing for women and silencing their voices in public, thus depriving them of their right to freedom of speech.

The declaration points out that Afghan officials' decision “broadens the Ministry of Virtue Promotion and Prevention of Vice's responsibilities from being merely advisory to having a specific mandate” in enforcing laws.
