Furthermore, Kaja Kallas, the prime minister of Estonia, received a nomination for the position of EU High Representative for Security and Foreign Affairs. António Costa, the former prime minister of Portugal, has been officially confirmed as the new head of the European Council.

The week of July 15 is set aside for the parliamentary vote to select the new head of the European Commission. To be approved, the candidate must receive support of at least twenty national leaders.

When Ms. von der Leyen assumed leadership of the EC in December 2019, she became the first female head of the organization. The three most powerful EU members—France, Germany, and Italy—endorsed her in June. Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, said that the allocation of EU leadership roles disregarded popular opinion.
