According to the EU statistics office, as of January 1, 2024, the population of European Union countries increased to 449.2 million from 447.6 million in the previous year.

Therefore, the rise was documented at the conclusion of the second successive year following a decrease in the prior two years as a result of the impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak. The population decreased by approximately 0.5 million in 2020 and nearly 0.3 million in 2021.

The recent surge in population can mainly be attributed to a rise in migration. According to the report, the positive net migration has overshadowed the natural decrease in population (higher deaths than births).

On January 1, 2024, the population of Germany, France, and Italy combined made up nearly half (47%) of the total population of the EU. Malta's population is 0.6 million, whereas Germany's population is 83.4 million.

Seven EU Member States experienced a decrease in population numbers last year. The largest impacts were seen in Poland (132.8 thousand people), Greece (16.8 thousand people), and Hungary (15.1 thousand people). Spain experienced the largest population growth with an increase of 525.1 thousand people, followed by Germany with 330 thousand people and France with 229 thousand people.
