The first flight of a humanitarian airlift to earthquake-stricken Afghanistan has already been sent, according to the European Commission (EC).

On this occasion, European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič stated, "Following the recent series of devastating earthquakes in Afghanistan, the EU is determined to extend our assistance and support to the Afghan people in need."

Ninety-two tons of relief goods arrived in the city of Herat on Monday. According to the EC communiqué, the cargo comprised, among other things, blankets and kits for winter tent equipment, 20 tons of medications for the World Health Organization, and 15 tons of food for the World Food Program.

The flights to Herat and Kabul, the second and third, are expected to depart shortly. They will deliver help from humanitarian partners in the EU, including Italy and Ireland. France is also mobilizing its storage and transportation resources in order to help the people of Afghanistan.
