Personal computer (PC) sales hit a peak in nearly 10 years and have risen to 2012 levels, CNBC writes, citing data from research firm IDC. Total PC shipments in 2021 reached 348.8 million units, up 14.8% from 2020. PC sales have been declining since 2012, hitting a low in 2017 and rising sharply during the pandemic. Sales in 2021 were 34% higher than in 2017. Demand for PCs has risen again due to the shift towards remote working and study, CNBC notes.
Experts are divided on the future outlook for the PC market. Some warn that the pace of sales will not be sustainable after the pandemic recession, CNBC writes. In December, for example, IDC said the market had passed the peak of pandemic demand and predicted a slowdown in 2022.
At that, PC manufacturers remain optimistic. The pandemic has led to a permanent change in buying behaviour, with every user now needing their own PC, Dell chief executive Rahul Tikoo told the channel. "We are moving from one PC per household to one PC per person in a household similar to smartphones," Tikoo explained.
