Candidates may be nominated by members of the Fund's Executive Board or Board of Governors, per the rules. Applications will be accepted starting on March 14 and ending on April 3; the procedure will be kept confidential.
Following the applications review, a three-person shortlist will be created and made public beforehand. After that, the candidates will meet in person with the Board of Governors, who will then choose the new Managing Director.
By the end of April, the IMF intends to have the process of choosing a new head completed.
Kristalina Georgieva is the current IMF head; she assumed the role in October 2019 and will serve a typical five-year term. The managing director may serve in such capacity for a number of periods in a row, according to the website of the global financial institution.
