Google was fined $162.2 million last week by India's antitrust authority for abusing its dominant position in a number of areas within the Android mobile ecosystem.
The Indian watchdog noted in a recent decision that Google's control over the Play Store gives it the right to impose terms on app developers and require them to use its own payment system. The Play Store is by far the largest app marketplace connecting app developers with users in the Android ecosystem, the regulator noted.
The Indian Competition Commission ordered Google to make clear and transparent policies regarding the data collected on the platform used by the company, use of such data by the platform, and the potential and actual sharing of such data with app developers or other organizations. It also ordered Google to permit app developers to use any third-party billing services.
