"The total coal production in fiscal 2021-22 was 777.02 million tonnes (provisional) as against 716 million tonnes in fiscal 2020-21, recording an increase of 8.55%. Coal India Ltd's (state-owned coal mining corporation) production increased by 4.43% from 596.02 million tonnes in FY 2020-21 to 622.06 million tonnes in FY 2021-22... Total coal shipment in FY 2021-22 was 818 million tonnes against 690.07 million tonnes a year earlier, an increase of 18.43%. Coal India Ltd shipped 661.08 million tonnes of coal during the period against the 2020-21 figure of 573.08 million tonnes. Coal India reached its highest production level of 53.4 million tonnes in April this year, marking an increase of 6.02 per cent," the ministry said.
Second state-owned coal miner Singareni Collieries Company produced 65 million tonnes during 2021-22, up from 50.05 million tonnes in the previous year, the ministry noted.
India's total coal production in April this year was 66.15 million tonnes. While Coal India Ltd and its subsidiaries produced 53.4 million tonnes of coal, Singareni Colleries Company Ltd produced 5.32 million tonnes and production from closed mines reached 7.36 million tonnes last month, the ministry said.
"According to preliminary statistics from the coal ministry, while total coal sector consumption for the month was 70.8 million tonnes, power sector consumption reached 61.7 million tonnes in April. At the same time, coal consumption in the power sector in India alone stood at 49.7 million tonnes," the ministry said.
