Venezuela's Attorney General Tarek William Saab stated that an investigation has been launched into opposition figure Maria Corina Machado and former presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, reports the Associated Press.

The written statement from the attorney general reads that Machado and Gonzalez wrongly announced a winner of the presidential election that was not in line with the one announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE), the sole entity permitted to make such declarations.

Saab stated that they openly encouraged police and military officials to disobey the law, committing crimes such as usurpation of office, spreading false information to instill fear, and conspiracy.

Venezuela's INE declared the election results, showing President Nicolas Maduro winning with 51.2% of the votes, but the opposition claims their candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia won with 73% of the votes.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also stated last week that the U.S. government acknowledged Edmundo Gonzalez as the victor of the presidential election.
