The fine was imposed for violation of the European Data Protection Law (GDPR), which came into force in 2018. In January 2019, Twitter announced that it had fixed an issue that could have caused private tweets from users with Android smartphones to be publicly available.
Twitter noted that the problem existed for several years. Irish regulators and the European Data Protection Commission concluded that Twitter belatedly reported the data threat to users and thus violated the GDPR law, which came into force in 2018.
"We accept responsibility for this error and reaffirm our full commitment to the protection of our users' data," the company commented on its corporate blog. "We are very sorry that this happened."
