The Italian head of government will formally resign on 26 January.
"The Council of Ministers will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 26 January, at 9:00 am, during which Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will inform his ministers of his wish to go to the Quirinal Palace and tender his resignation. Following this, Prime Minister Conte will go to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella," the government said in a statement.
The question of the government's resignation was raised after former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's Italia Viva party withdrew from the governing coalition and thus deprived the Prime Minister of majority support.
The occasion was Mr. Renzi's disagreement with Mr. Conte's policy on the distribution of EU funds allocated for the recovery of the Italian economy hit by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
