In 2000, Jeffrey Bezos, founder of Amazon’s largest e-commerce site, created Blue Origin aerospace company. The priority direction of the new company was the development of space tourism. However, Bezos decided not to limit himself to suborbital flights.
At a conference in Washington, Head of Blue Origin said that the company is working on a project on the colonization of the moon.
He presented a prototype of the Blue Moon spacecraft, which should be one of the key elements of the lunar infrastructure. The spacecraft, development of which took three years, will be able to carry a load of 3.6 to 6.5 tons. Bezos added that tests of the BE-7 engine, designed specifically for the lunar landing module, will begin in the summer.
Head of Amazon noted that in the future humanity will have to colonize not only the moon, but also some of the planets of the solar system.
“The time has come to return to the moon and to stay there this time,” concluded Bezos.
On May 3, Blue Origin conducted the eleventh test launch of the New Shepard spaceship, which is being developed for tourist flights.
The company rarely makes loud statements about future plans and prefers to draw the attention of the press to existing achievements. “Bezos is proud every time he makes a big announcement, he likes to talk about what he was able to achieve,” said Chad Anderson, founder of the venture capital firm Space Angels. Flying to the moon is a rare exception in his plans. The development of the Blue Moon landing module was first reported in 2017, and in the summer of 2018, the company announced that it was going to send the device to Earth satellite within five years.
