Johnson & Johnson has reached an agreement with the US state of New York under which it will pay New York City up to $263 million to offset the effects of the opioid crisis.

The New York State Attorney's Office notes that the agreement includes a ban on the manufacture and sale of opioids in New York by Johnson & Johnson, its divisions and assignees.

"The opioid epidemic has wreaked havoc among many communities in New York State and across the country, and many continue to be addicted to deadly opioids. Johnson & Johnson helped fan that fire, but they are now committing to getting out of the opioid business - not just in New York, but across the country," state Attorney General Letitia James is quoted as saying.

Johnson & Johnson notes in its press release that it is not calling for "company liability or culpability", and the decision to stop selling all prescription painkillers was made in 2020 for business reasons.

The US opioid crisis has been described as a rise in overdose deaths and abuse of prescription opioid analgesics. In February, the McKinsey consulting firm, which advised pharma companies to ramp up sales and advertising of such drugs, agreed to an out-of-court settlement as part of the crisis proceedings.
