Australia exported 80.23 million tonnes of LNG compared with 77.63 million in 2020. Qatar delivered almost as much last year as it did a year earlier - 77.83 million tonnes compared with 77.88 million tonnes. The US is on the third place for the third year in a row, with exports from there up almost 50% last year to 70.43 million tonnes from 47.35 million in 2020.
Australia, Qatar and the US accounted for 60% (almost 230 million tonnes) of all global LNG shipments last year, totalling just over 380 million tonnes. Meanwhile, 76% of these three countries' exports came from Asia, 18% from Europe and about 6% from South America.
However, a spike in gas prices at Europe's largest hub, the TTF, in the second half of December caused US LNG tankers bound for Asia to change routes and turn around for Europe. As a result, shipments to the European region reached a record 6.81 million tons in December, while 1.98 million tons were exported to Asia.
