80% of Japanese people believe that the Summer Olympics, to be held this summer in Tokyo, should be cancelled or postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the possible increase in the number of infections if the competitions are held.

Kyodo news agency published such findings, received in a survey, on Sunday.

The Tokyo Summer Olympics were due to take place in 2020, but were postponed until 2021 because of the pandemic. It is now due to take place between July 23 and August 8.

Already last year, residents of Tokyo had argued for the summer Olympics not to take place at all or to be delayed again, and International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach spoke of the possibility of cancelling the Olympics if it could not be held even in the summer of 2021.

35.3% of participants in the Kyodo poll were in favour of cancelling the Tokyo Olympics, while 44.8% were in favour of another postponement.

A total of 521 randomly selected households took part in the survey; they were called by home phone and a further 520 people were interviewed by mobile phone.
