London and Paris are shocked by Trump’s suggestion to legalize firearms

Donald Trump, in his speech to the National Rifle Association of the United States (NRA), said that if France and the UK legalized firearms, the number of victims of terrorist attacks in Paris, as well as cold-weapon attacks in Britain, would decrease. Trump's statements provoked outrage in both countries, and some French politicians have already called on him to apologize for these words.

The speech of US President Donald Trump to the National Rifle Association of the United States sparked outrage in Britain and France. He said that softening firearms laws would help prevent terrorist attacks in these countries, as passersby would have weapons and they could stop the terrorists. This refers to the terrorist attacks in Paris, committed on November 13, 2015, as well as the growing number of attacks with the use of cold steel arms in the UK. According to Trump, if firearms were allowed in France, "this would be a completely different story," since terrorists would have fled or were killed. "Paris, France, has the most stringent laws on weapons in the world... No one in Paris has a firearm, no one, and we all remember more than 130 dead and a huge number of people with terrible wounds," Trump said in his speech.

The very next day the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement stating that "France strongly condemns President Trump's statements about the attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015 and demands respect for the memory of the victims. France is proud to be a country where the acquisition and carrying of firearms is strictly regulated." French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire expressed hope that Donald Trump will apologize for his words. "His words are shocking, they are unworthy of President of the world's greatest superpower," he said. Other French politicians also expressed outrage at the words of the American president.

Trump also said that some "very authoritative" London hospital is now crowded with people with knife wounds. "They do not have firearms. They have knives, and blood flows through all the floors of this hospital. They say that things are worse than in a war zone hospital. Knives, knives, knives,"- said Trump in his speech.

Since the beginning of this year, London and the UK as a whole have really been swept by a wave of attacks using cold steel arms. According to the British newspaper The Sunday Times, the number of crimes with the use of cold weapons has increased in some regions of the country almost twice over the past three years. In February and March, London bypassed New York by the number of murders, and 36 people were slaughtered in the British capital since the beginning of the year. According to the British police, a sharp increase in the number of such crimes is associated with intensification of the activity of drug traffickers gangs who seek to take on new markets, including in rural areas.

Several British trauma surgeons have written about the increase in the number of stab wounds in recent months. They also criticized Trump’s statement. "There is much that we can do to combat this violence, but it is ridiculous to offer to allow firearms to solve this problem. Gunshot wounds are twice as likely as knives, leading to death, and it's more difficult to recover after them "said trauma surgeon Karim Brohi.
