The SPD received 39% of the vote, the Greens - 24.2%. Both parties were included in the former government of the land. According to Die Zeit, the CDU has gained such a weak result for the second time in its history. The right-populist Alternative for Germany (AdG) also passed into parliament.

The turnout was 63.3%. 1.3 million local residents have the right to vote. They chose between 348 candidates from 15 parties.

The CDU said they were disappointed with the election result. CDU General Secretary Paul Ziemiak believes that the failure of the party can be explained by the election scandal in Thuringia.

Recall that Thomas Kemmerich, a candidate from the Free Democratic Party of Germany (FDP), won the elections in Thuringia (the former East German state). He received support from MPs of the right-wing AdG (all 22 representatives in the parliament of the land voted for him), the CDU and the FDP itself. In the history of the country there has never been a case when a land’s Head received a position thanks to the support of AdG.

Against the background of the incident, the CDU Chairman and Minister of Defense of Germany, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, announced the decision not to run for Chancellor and resign as Party Leader.
