Nikkei: Samsung Electronics wants to create chip development and manufacturing hub in Japan

According to Nikkei newspaper, Samsung Electronics of South Korea intends to invest more than 30 billion yen (about $222 million) in the construction of a chip development and manufacturing centre in Yokohama, Japan.

Samsung Electronics currently operates the Samsung R&D Institute Japan in Yokohama. The new hub is anticipated to be constructed separately and serve as the location of a line for manufacturing prototype chips.

Other information has not yet been made public, however it is anticipated that the new hub will be operating as early as 2025. Samsung Electronics has not provided a response to the publication.

Japan has already started construction on a facility for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the largest semiconductor producer in the world. The Japanese government offers subsidies for the building. Sony and other sources also reported on intentions to construct a semiconductor manufacturing facility.
