More than 70 multinational companies have called for a global agreement to fight plastic pollution. Among the signatories to the joint statement are Coca-Cola and Pepsico, Unilever and Nestle, retail chain Walmart and French bank BNP Paribas, reports Reuters.
The joint statement said the agreement should include reductions in plastic production and "will contribute to efforts to combat climate change and biodiversity loss, bringing positive social and economic impacts".
The United Nations (UN) Assembly Conference on the Environment - UNEA 5.2 - will be held in 2022. It will discuss international agreements to tackle the plastic waste crisis that is overflowing landfills, ravaging oceans and causing irreversible damage to wildlife.
The companies said in a statement that the UNEA 5.2 conference is "a critical time for an ambitious UN treaty". In their estimation, concluding an agreement at the conference means "turning the tide of the global plastic pollution crisis". "We cannot afford to miss this," the signatories to the appeal said.
Globally, no more than 10% of all plastic ever produced is recycled. Production of plastic derived from oil and gas is projected to double within 20 years. For companies in the fuel and energy sector, plastic production is the main source of future revenue: demand for fossil fuels is declining as renewables and electric vehicles increase.
