A quarter of Africa's population, or 350 million people, experience food shortages, according to Robert Mardini, Director General of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who was speaking at the People and Defense conference.

Mardini contends that as the Ukraine crisis continues, its detrimental impacts spread more widely. He specifically cited growing poverty, unprecedented levels of inflation, and skyrocketing energy and food prices.

"Around 350 million people, or 25 percent of the continent's population, experience severe food shortages in Africa alone. As the world's food supply is disturbed and crops continue to be unstable due to a lack of fertilizer, the situation is certain to get worse," Mardini added.

While noting that there are more than 100 armed conflicts worldwide, the Director General of the Red Cross continued by saying that the situation in Ukraine continues to dominate international media.
