US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as well as the Foreign Ministers of Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand issued a joint statement condemning China's actions towards Hong Kong. They called the postponement of the parliamentary elections an undermining of the fundamental rights and freedoms of the inhabitants of the special administrative region (SAR).

“These moves have undermined the democratic process that was fundamental to the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong. We express deep concern about Beijing's introduction of a new national security law that undermines the fundamental rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents,” the statement said. The foreign ministers called on the authorities to restore the access of the suspended candidates to the vote and hold elections as soon as possible.

Earlier, the European Union called on the Hong Kong authorities to reconsider the decision to postpone the elections to the Legislative Council. The elections were scheduled for September 6, but later officials decided to postpone them to September 5, 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Hong Kong's National Security Law, passed in July 2020, regulates relations between Beijing and the SAR and provides for measures to prevent security threats in the region. It is assumed that Beijing will receive the right to use its intelligence officers in the SAR, which, according to supporters of Hong Kong's autonomy, will allow the Chinese authorities to detain citizens they dislike without trial. In response to the decision of the PRC authorities, the United States imposed sanctions against Chinese officials and deprived Hong Kong of its privileged business partner status.
