Study: Humankind will shift to alternative meat in 20 years

By 2035, one in ten meat, eggs, dairy products and seafood items consumed worldwide will be made from alternative proteins. This is what the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Blue Horizon Corporation study says.

The experts predict that the market for alternative products will reach at least $290 billion by 2035. 

Under a baseline scenario, it would grow from the current 13 million tons per year to 97 million tons by 2035, accounting for 11 percent of the total protein market. With more rapid technological change, the figure could be double that.

The study notes that the artificial food boom will have a positive effect on the environment as well as help mankind beat hunger. 

Switching to plant-based meat and eggs would save a gigaton of CO2 equivalent by 2035 (an effect comparable to if Japan became carbon-neutral for a year). It would also save 39 billion cubic meters of water, enough volume to supply London for 40 years.

The authors of the report expect that by 2023-2025, alternative products will equal the taste and price of traditional products.
