"Kevin Mayer is leaving TikTok just a few months after he became CEO," the newspaper quoted the letter to employees. Mayer has been the CEO of the company since May 2020.
According to the document, the current general manager Vanessa Pappas will become the interim head of TikTok.
It is noted that Mayer decided to leave after Trump ordered to ban TikTok in the United States, if the owner of the application, ByteDance, does not sell it to any American company by September 15. The US administration accuses TikTok of being able to transfer data from Americans to the PRC authorities. The owners of the app deny this.
Earlier in August, Microsoft announced it was continuing negotiations to buy the TikTok business in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with plans to conclude by September 15. Media later reported that Twitter had preliminary talks with the Chinese service TikTok about a possible merger with the US branch of the application.
TikTok is an app for creating and viewing short videos owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. Released in 2018, it has become the leader in the short video app segment in China and is gaining popularity around the world.
