Acting U.S. Defense Secretary Robert G. Salesses said that the troop count at the Mexican border might vary, stating, "This is only the beginning."

He added that military members will assist in building fences at the border. The department will additionally supply airplanes to deport over 5,000 detained migrants, according to AP reports.

The border between the United States and Mexico stretches approximately 3.2 thousand kilometers. Currently, there are around 2,500 troops from the US National Guard present. Prior to that, no U.S. troops were present there. Starting from January 21, the US has been implementing a state of emergency at the southern border, a measure initiated by Donald Trump to curb illegal immigration.
