According to the Financial Times, UK health authorities have suggested a new coronavirus re-vaccination program to combat the new BA.2.86 sub-variant. In particular, the UK's Health Safety Agency has suggested accelerating the fall vaccination campaign to begin immunizing the most susceptible individuals as early as September 11 in order to increase protection against a severe course of the disease.
Since the middle of the summer, cases of BA.2.86, a novel variation of Omicron, have been reported in the US, the UK, Denmark, Israel, South Africa, and Portugal. The sub-variant, known as "Pirola," has a lot of mutations that may allow it get beyond the protections of the current vaccines, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Katelyn Jetelina, a scientific advisor at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, claims that BA.2.86 is fundamentally different from the prevalent COVID-19 variations that are currently in circulation. The evolutionary jump of BA.2.86, according to Jesse Bloom, a professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, is comparable to that of the original Omicron.
