U.K. car production in July was the lowest for the month since 1956, according to the local Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). There were 58,438 cars produced, 37.6 percent fewer than there were in July 2020. This is the first year-over-year drop in production for the month since February, the society said in a statement. In July 1956, 51,472 machines were produced.
Production for the domestic market fell 38.7 percent last month to 8,233 machines. Production for export fell 37.4% to 45,205 cars. 84.6% of vehicles went abroad - more than eight out of every ten produced. More than a quarter of all cars assembled in July were electric or hybrid, the highest proportion ever measured, according to SMMT.
Since the beginning of the year, the U.K. has produced a total of 552,361 vehicles, an 18.3% increase over the same period in 2020. However, the country's auto industry still lags significantly behind the January-July 2019 results by 28.7%: a total of 774,760 cars were assembled then.
As the incidence of COVID-19 increases in the U.K. due to the spread of the delta variant, hundreds of thousands of people have been notified ("pinged") to go on self-isolation from the National Health Service app that tracks contact with those infected, Reuters wrote. "If the impact of 'pingdemic' is to diminish as self-isolation rules change, the global semiconductor shortage is virtually unmitigated," said SMMT CEO Mike Howes.
