The specialized software, named DeliveryDefense, assigns a unique score to a single delivery location on a scale of 1 to 1,000 using data on shipments over the previous two years, including package theft instances at each specific address, and machine learning algorithms.

A package left on the doorstep is more likely to be stolen the lower the final score is. In this scenario, the recipient will be instructed to pick it up personally at a merchant location or a UPS drop-off location.

According to a report by Security.org, parcel theft has become a significant issue for Americans: in 2022, 49 million of them will have lost at least one box in the previous 12 months. The average amount of stolen products was $50, and recipients suffered a total loss of $2.4 billion.
