The US regulator has announced launching an inspection of Tesla electric cars due to complaints about the availability of video games to drivers while driving.

The inspection affects around 580,000 electric vehicles in all four Tesla models, the S, X, Y and 3, launched since 2017.

"This feature... may distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement.

Video games on centre displays, according to the watchdog, became available to drivers while driving from December 2020. Prior to that, the feature only worked in a parked electric vehicle.

"To date, the administration has received a complaint from one owner describing the gaming functionality," the regulator said. There is no mention of any video game-related incidents in its submissions.
