WHO: Number of countries with new omicron subspecies is growing

According to the World Health Organization (WHO)'s weekly epidemiological report on COVID-19, the number of nations where different subspecies of the omicron strain of the coronavirus have been detected is growing.

"BA.4, BA.5, and BA.2.12.1 have gained various new mutations that may impact their properties. The number of cases and nations reporting detection of these three variations is increasing, according to GISAID and reports from WHO regional and national offices," the document states.

The number of new cases of coronavirus continues to decline, according to WHO. In the week from 25 April to 1 May, the number of infections globally fell by 17% and the number of deaths fell by 3% from the previous week (18-24 April).

As of 1 May 2022, there were more than 500 million confirmed infections and more than six million deaths from the coronavirus worldwide.
