The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it would take up to $45 billion to provide vaccines against the coronavirus to most adults worldwide by 2022.

He said vaccine production must also be ramped up to achieve population immunity.

Mr Ghebreyesus said more cases of COVID-19 had been detected in the past two weeks than in the first six months of the pandemic.

"We estimate we will need between $35 billion and $45 billion more next year to vaccinate the majority of adults in the world," the WHO chief told a briefing.

Earlier the European Commission (EC) proposed to allow foreigners entering the EU territory provided that they have been vaccinated against COVID-19 at least two weeks prior to that by one of the preparations approved in the EU.

The EC later clarified that the proposal did not exclude the need for visitors to undergo PCR tests and quarantine. Four vaccines have now been approved in the EU: AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson.
