According to Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), many nations are lacking in medical professionals and caregivers for persons with disabilities. By 2030, he claimed, there might be a 10 million person shortfall in this field.

Many doctors relocate to foreign nations in quest of higher salary and better working conditions, as Mr. Ghebreyesus explained. He noted that many were working in hazardous settings, "with low pay and inadequate training" even prior to COVID-19, and that, during the pandemic, half of the sector's employees experienced emotional burnout.

The poorest nations will experience the largest shortages, says the WHO. Therefore, all nations are urged to "protect and invest in their health and care employees."

Additionally, according to the WHO, these workers need to have "safe working conditions, respectable remuneration, protection of their legal rights at work, and protection from violence and discrimination."
