WHO reports first in two months rise in morbidity and mortality from COVID-19

The global number of reported cases and deaths from COVID-19 has increased for the first time in two months, the WHO Director-General said. He linked the new rise to the growing incidence in Europe.

The number of cases and deaths from COVID-19 has risen globally for the first time in two months. This was announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) at a briefing on Thursday, 28 October. Nearly 3 million new cases were reported globally in the week ending Sunday, up 4% from the previous seven days, according to the WHO, CNBC reported. 

According to the WHO, while the incidence is falling in other regions of the world, it has been rising for three consecutive weeks in Europe. Globally, the number of COVID-19 cases fell 4% a week earlier, while in Europe it rose 7%. The number of cases in Europe has risen by 18% in the past week, WHO figures show.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, analysed by CNBC, the average number of cases in the Czech Republic and Hungary has increased by more than 100% over seven days compared with the previous week (as of Wednesday, October 26). In Croatia, Denmark, Norway and Poland the average number of cases increased by more than 70% over the week (as of 26 October).
