According to Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation, the European Commission is expected to delay the release of a plan to eliminate the use of Russian fuels, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG). They stated that the proposal might be unveiled on March 26, which is a month later than first scheduled.

The agency states that the roadmap is likely to detail the actions EU member countries need to undertake to fully eliminate reliance on Russian fuel.

According to Bloomberg, LNG from Russia continues to be one of the last significant energy dependencies for Europe following the halt of supplies via Ukraine late last year. In 2024, the EU brought in unprecedented amounts of the ultra-cooled fuel from Russia. Simultaneously, France, Spain, and Belgium emerged as the top importers. Several EU nations are still purchasing nuclear fuel from Russia, the agency reports.

Bloomberg reports that a coalition of 10 EU nations is aiming to strengthen regulations against Russia by enacting limits on natural gas and LNG deliveries. Nonetheless, these initiatives are complicated by the requirement to secure agreement from all 27 members of the bloc. The agency reminds us that the European Commission aims to “liberate” itself from Russian supplies by 2027.
