On Sunday, the U.S. enacted sanctions and a 25 percent tariff on all products from Colombia due to Bogota's unwillingness to take back deported migrants. U.S. President Donald Trump cautioned that this was merely the start, asserting that Washington would not permit Bogota to renege on its obligation to accept Colombian citizens deported from the United States.

Trump has additionally prohibited entry to the US for Colombian officials, enforced visa limitations on their family members and associates, and subjected all Colombian nationals at the US border to heightened screening.

“I directed the foreign trade minister to increase tariffs on imports from the U.S. by 25 percent,” Petro posted on social media X. "The Ministry of Foreign Trade ought to assist in steering our exports to all nations worldwide except the U.S."

The president additionally urged for an increase in Colombia's exports and a substitution of US products domestically.

“I encourage all Colombian communities living abroad to become vendors of our products.” “Goods from North America, which will see a rise in price in the domestic market, should be substituted with domestic products; the government will assist with this,” the politician stated.
