In 2024, the import of Chinese products to Germany saw a small decline of 0.3%, totaling €156.3 billion. This number has not significantly decreased, even though in July of the previous year the European Commission (EC) instituted tariffs on electric vehicles from China (in October, the duration of these fees, which can reach 35.3%, was prolonged for five years). Germany itself disagreed with the EC's decision.
Trade statistics with China categorized by commodity will be provided later; however, based on the fourth quarter data, the increase in imports of Chinese solar panels and other energy transition goods to Germany may offset the imposed restrictions. Consequently, China continued to be the leading provider of products to Germany by a significant distance.
The decrease in exports to the PRC can, in part, be linked to the redirection of German shipments toward markets in "politically allied" economies. Since 2023, specialists from the WTO, UNCTAD, and various international organizations have been discussing the growing impact of political elements on trade relations, describing this trend as a consequence of Russia's military actions in Ukraine
