Japan again asks the U.S. for exemption from the duties

Japan has once more requested the United States for relief from the duties it enforces, including the so-called "reciprocal tariffs," a subject that was discussed in a dialogue between Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwai and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the Munich Security Conference.

"I stated our stance that Japan must not be subjected to the measures referred to as reciprocal duties," the foreign minister informed the media.

The passage from the speech is cited by the NHK television network.

Specifically, the minister requested that Japan be exempted from the 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports imposed by the US. Tokyo is also requesting a waiver from the so-called "reciprocal duties," the order regarding which was signed by Trump last Thursday.

This action aims to enforce retaliatory customs duties on imported goods, comparable in scale to those that exporting nations have placed on goods from the United States.

According to the TV channel, the discussion also addressed the subject of potential tariffs on Japanese automotive products exported to the United States. Previously, US President Donald Trump stated that he intends to levy tariffs on vehicles brought into the nation "around April 2."
