The regulator determined that the firms and ACEA had engaged in anti-competitive agreements and coordinated actions in this sector for over 15 years. Among other aspects, the cartel members consented to refrain from compensating recyclers and to withhold details regarding which components of the car were recyclable.

The European Commission penalized Stellantis, Ford Motor, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, Toyota, Volkswagen and others, and with Renault/Nissan facing the heaviest penalty of €81 million.

Mercedes-Benz, a member of the cartel that disclosed details to the regulator, escaped the penalty.

At the same time, the British Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), after a comparable inquiry, imposed fines totaling 77.68 million pounds ($99.5 million) on a coalition of car manufacturers and two industry bodies.
