As of now, 2.86 million Syrian refugees are still in Turkey among 4.1 million total foreigners.
Ali Yerlikaya informed reporters that 821,529 individuals have chosen to return to Syria voluntarily since 2017. Alongside Syrians, Turkey also hosts 1.06 million foreigners holding residence permits, with 190,000 people still under international protection.
In recent years, with the worsening economic crisis, Turkish citizens have organized protests calling for restrictions on the arrival of Syrian refugees (Turkey hosts nearly double the number compared to Lebanon and the EU).
The UN reports that over 500,000 refugees have gone back to Syria since last September, with 200,000 of them returning after Bashar al-Assad stepped down. Approximately 30% of the millions of Syrians residing in Middle Eastern nations wish to return within a year.
