Sales of electric vehicles grew by 21% year over year to 20,935 in January. Locals bought 1.001 million of electric cars since the indicator's computation began in 2002.
"It has taken just over 20 years to reach the 1 million mark, but with the right support measures we can increase sales by a further 1 million over the next two years," Mike Howes, chief executive of SMMT, said.
Sales of passenger cars in the UK increased 8.2% year over year in January to 142,876 units. The number has grown for eighteen months in a row.
Diesel vehicle sales decreased 10.1% to 9,348 while gasoline vehicle sales increased by 7.5% to 81,905.
Kia Sportage, Ford Puma, and Nissan Qashqai were the most popular car models in Britain in the first month of this year, with sales of each model surpassing 4,000 pieces.
