U.S. Uber Technologies, in collaboration with China's WeRide and Baidu Inc. (Apollo Go service), will begin testing self-driving taxis in Dubai this year; however, a driver will still be present to guarantee safety, according to the Dubai government's press office.

The program is a component of a broader plan by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) aimed at establishing the city as a worldwide leader in autonomous transportation.

"The collaboration with Uber and WeRide, alongside Baidu, signifies a move toward enhancing Dubai's strategy for unmanned transportation. This initiative aims to convert 25 percent of all city trips into autonomous journeys across various transportation modes by 2030," stated RTA chief Mattar Al Tayer.

This partnership highlights the RTA's dedication to connecting with international technology leaders and is part of the autonomous mobility experiments initiated in 2016, which have grown more varied in recent times.
