The American firm OpenAI, known for creating the ChatGPT, is developing its own social network, aiming to be a counterpart to social network X, reports The Verge. As per its sources, the project remains in the initial phases, yet there is already a prototype developed internally.

According to sources, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has solicited input from external parties regarding the project. It's uncertain if the social network will be launched as a separate app or incorporated into ChatGPT, which was the most downloaded app globally in March. A representative from OpenAI did not reply to a request for a statement.

OpenAI's strategies are expected to escalate Altman's already intense competition with X's owner Elon Musk. Following Musk's proposal to acquire OpenAI for $97.4 billion, Altman replied in February by rejecting the offer and countering with a proposal to buy Twitter for a fraction of that amount - $9.74 billion.

In March, Musk transferred ownership of his social network X to his AI company xAI for $45 billion. The billionaire stated that X has a valuation of $33 billion ($45 billion minus $12 billion in debt), while xAI is valued at $80 billion. According to an anonymous source speaking to Bloomberg, the resulting company XAI Holdings has a value exceeding $100 billion, not including debt.
