Code Conference, organized by a core publication Recode, is held annually in late May - early June in Dana Point (California). The event gathers representatives of leading technology companies. The atmosphere is relaxed - speeches of the participants take a form of a conversation with the conference’s organizers. They discuss questions that until recently were perceived as fiction. This year’s edition was no exception – one of its other important topics was future colonization of Mars. An assumption that people would be able to colonize Mars as early as 2025 was aired by the founder of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) and Tesla Motors, engineer and billionaire Elon Musk.
According to Mr. Musk, his company SpaceX will send a manned spacecraft to Mars as early as 2024. He estimates that the spacefaring will several months, so people will land on Mars in 2025. In 2018, SpaceX plans to launch space travelling to Mars on Dragon V2 spacecraft. However, the first flights will be unmanned, as it is not technically possible for the ship to return to Earth. According to SpaceX’s calculations, unmanned flights to Mars could be carried out approximately every 26 months. In September this year, Elon Musk intends to submit a detailed plan for Mars development. Already now he warns that the space explorers will have to deliver a large number of goods on this planet: all kinds of equipment and supplies, as well as people and everything necessary for their life. According to him, all this will come in handy for arranging an independent and growing city on Mars.
The entrepreneur even gave tips the first colonists on what form of organization of society they should choose, and what kind of business would fit to local conditions. According to Elon Musk, the best form of social order for them would be direct democracy, and processing of iron ore would be the most profitable on the Red Planet. However, Head of SpaceX also predicted prosperity pizza-delivering companies.
Mr. Musk also shared his thoughts on prospects of Mars development and colonization of the solar system. According to him, there is no need to conquer Mars to use it as a substitute for the Earth. "I do not think it's right. Why leave the Earth? It's so wonderful,"- he said. In his view, it is important to aim to the stars in the future. "The idea is not to be a people of one planet, constantly moving from one to another. The idea is to live on many planets, extend the life beyond the solar system, and then continue. This is a really exciting future. Such ideas are necessary to wake up with a smile every morning. After all, life is about solving problems only, they still need to be inspiring for life to be nice ", - the businessman said.
