A survey by S&P Global Market Intelligence showed that the overall number of bankruptcy filings by U.S. corporations at the end of the third quarter was 182, up from 62 in September. In contrast, the second quarter saw 157 bankruptcies.
According to S&P Global, there have been 516 business bankruptcies in the US since the beginning of 2023, an increase from the total number of bankruptcies for both 2021 and 2022.
With 518 U.S. corporations filing for bankruptcy in the first nine months of 2020, the total number of bankruptcies in that year was the largest since 2010 (639).
