Apple drops out of top five leaders of Chinese smartphone market in Q2

Over 70 million smartphones were shipped into China in the second quarter, a 10% rise over the same period the previous year. U.S. Apple Inc. dropped out of the top 5 suppliers, shows data from analytics firm Canalys.

According to Canalys analyst Lucas Zhong, local businesses hold the top five positions on the list of the biggest smartphone suppliers in the PRC for the first time ever.

The Vivo brand emerged as the market leader with a 15% year-over-year growth in sales to 13.1 million smartphones and a 19% market share. OPPO held the second position with a 16% market share in spite of a 1% decrease in sales.

HONOR ranked third with 15.5% of the market and 10.7 million devices sold, followed by Huawei in fourth place (15%) and Xiaomi in fifth place (14%), with 10.6 million units sold.

U.S. Apple Inc. fell out of the top 5 top sellers in China last quarter after selling just 9.7 million devices there. Its market share fell to 14% from 15% in the first quarter and 16% in the second quarter of last year.
